Fans

GETTING STARTED

1. What is the basic purpose of a fan?
Fans circulate the air and keep it in motion, maintaining fresh breeze that cools an area as well as keeps humidity levels in check. Fans also add ventilation and prevent inhalation of dangerous gases and fumes.

2. What are the different types of fans?
There are three basic types of fans that are available in the market :

  • The Ceiling Fan: The ceiling fan has several ranges coming under it such as aspiration, deco premium, deco classic and performance.
  • Portable Fans: Portable fans have various types coming under its wings which range from table fans, pedestal fans, wall mounted and the personal range.
  • Exhaust Fans: The kitchen/ bathroom exhaust fans come with ventilating features in plastic, axial and metal.

3. Why ceiling fans are required?
The primary purpose of a ceiling fan is to provide ventilation and improve air circulation to make you feel cooler by virtue of the velocity of air. It is like the comfort of a breeze in an otherwise warm day.

4. Why portable fans are required?
Portable fans are small, of a compact size and allows for easy transport. It is suitable for cooling personal spaces and can be placed on floors, desks, tables or counter tops. They are affordably priced and offer economical cooling. It has an adjustable height for convenient operation. Many have oscillating heads for more air distribution. They are great for cooling large rooms.

5. Why exhaust fans are required?
Exhaust fans greatly reduce or eliminate problems created by excess moisture, prevents paint from peeling, doors from warping and accumulation of mold spores. These eliminate and exhaust stagnant air and odour out of bathrooms making it a must-have product in every home

CEILING FANS

1. What are the parts of a ceiling fan?
The outer Parts of the ceiling fan are: Blade, Trim, Motor trim, Bottom cover, Upper Canopy, Downrod, Lower Canopy, Top cover.

2. What are the available sizes in ceiling fans?
A ceiling fan comes in various sizes from 600mm, 900 mm, 1050mm to 1400 mm with 1200 mm size being the most common.

3. What are the specifications of a ceiling fan?

  • Speed: Speed is the distance covered per unit of time.
  • Power Consumption: It often refers to the electrical energy over time supplied to operate an electrical appliance. The energy used by equipment is always more than the energy really needed.
  • Sweep: The ceiling fan blade sweep refers to the distance around the circle the blades create as they turn. Knowing the ceiling fan blade sweep will also help you to choose a fan. A correctly sized fan will efficiently cool your space.
  • RPM : RPM refers to how fast the blades spin at a specific speed. The faster the blades spin, the more air they move provided the blades have the right pitch. Ideally, to achieve the best ceiling fan airflow, you can buy a fan that has six separate speed settings ranging from low to very high.

4. Can you elaborate a little more about the various parts of the ceiling fan?
Most certainly we will guide you on every aspect of the ceiling fan so that you understand the fan as a whole and the use of every part that makes a fan such an important appliance in our homes today.

  • Motor: The motor is the most important component of a ceiling fan. For example, motors with higher power capability can be matched with high pitch aerodynamic blades to deliver high air at lower speed/RPM and hence causing lower noise. Motor consists of various parts like Ball bearing, Stator, Stack Height, Copper winding on rotor, rotor, Capacitor.
  • Capacitor: There are usually two capacitors in a ceiling fan motor. One is the “ Start” capacitor and the other is the “ Run” capacitor. Simply put, an AC motor needs a rotating magnetic field in order to turn the motor shaft (fan blades). This is done by applying voltage with different phases to different windings. In a single phase system (like at your house where you would use a ceiling fan) there is only one voltage phase.
  • Blade:The Ceiling fans come in various blades from 3, 4, 5 with 3 blade being the most common. In India, mostly, ceiling fans with 3 blades are used.Three blades turn out to be the optimum number of blades for best air moving performance and efficiency. Many ceiling fans designed for the home come with standard four or five blades. Beyond having a pleasing symmetrical aspect, it is at the 4-blade and 5-blade level that the ideal balance is achieved between the amount of air circulated and amount of tolerable ambient noise. It is stated that greater numbers of blades are usually added for styling purposes. The fan blade size and the number of fan blades do matter to a large extent. The bigger (e.g., wider or longer) the fan blade, the more airflow the blade is able to generate. Likewise, having more blades moving through the air would generate more airflow too.
  • Blade Pitch: A flat blade just slices through the air and does not assist air movement, so it is important that a blade of a ceiling fan is tilted at least 12 to 15 degrees. The angle assists air movement. It is also important to note that if pitch increases beyond 12-15 degree centigrade, the efficiency of motor running the fan decreases thus increasing electricity bills.

BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) launched a star rating scheme for ceiling fans in year 2006. It has currently only rated fans with size of 1200 mm and minimum air delivery of 210 cu m/min. The rating is given on basis of an indicator called “Service Value” which is ratio of air delivery (in cu m/min) to the power input. Greater the service value, higher the efficiency.

5. What is a safe distance between the ceiling and the fan blades?
Your ceiling fan’s blades need to be at about 12 inches from the ceiling to produce the best airflow. Unless it is a hugger ceiling fan that is designed to be closer to the ceiling, if your typical fan is too close or too far from the ceiling it won’t move as much air. If you have vaulted ceilings you’ll want to add a longer downrod so the blades are about 9 feet from the floor.

6. What kind of colours and finishes are fans available in?
Fans are available in various colours with different finishes as stated below:

  • Powder coated paint finish: It provides a more durable finish than liquid paints can offer, while still providing an attractive finish.Powder coated fans are more resistant to diminished coating quality as a result of impact, moisture, chemicals, ultraviolet light and other extreme weather conditions. In turn, this reduces the risk of scratches, chipping, abrasions, corrosion, fading and other wear issues.
  • Metallic paint finish: Metallic paint, sometimes also called “ Metal-flake” has actual pieces of metal in it which are highly reflective. The individual pieces tend to lay in the paint in a horizontal manner. They are mixed in with regular paint and are themselves fairly flat hence you can discern the individual pieces if you look closely.
  • Electroplated finish: Electroplating adds properties to metal which make it desirable throughout a wide range of industries. Electroplating is the preferred method for these customers because it provides wear resistance, protection from corrosion, resistance to friction and abrasion, hardness, electrical conductivity.

7. What are the special features of Luminous ceiling fans?
Luminous fans are made up of aluminium blades and an aluminium body. Aluminium saves from corrosion. It is a conductive material which dissipates more heat. it provides good finish. Aluminium has time being reliability and longevity of aluminium is more than that of sheet metal. In sheet metal, internal heat is more thus aluminium is the better option. Most fans come with some very useful additional features such as Touch pad RF remote, 5 speed, IR Regulator.

  • Integrated LED: It provides different types of LED and power consumption can be adjusted low or high. Several color options are available in the Integrated LED fans.
  • Sea breeze effect: The Sea breeze effect comes from the amalgamation of powder coated paint along with an aluminium body which avoid corrosion. The cool breeze that is let out from the fan perfectly blends well with the soaring temperatures of any given place and instantly cools down your living space. This high speed fan is highly preferable in coastal regions
PORTABLE FANS

What are the features of a Luminous portable fan?
Luminous portable fans have various features that allow them to be user friendly and aesthetically appealing
Mobility:It requires no installation and is low on power consumption.
Design: Aerodynamic design of blades which produce very less noise.
Material: Our fans are made up of plastic therefore they don't rust. Stainless steel will still rust (most steel fans are only coated or chromed) while brass fans can oxidize and require polishing.
Removable Grill: Fans will collect dust after a few months of use. An easily removable grill has been provided which is most convenient unlike some fans that need to be unscrewed and disassembled each time to reach the fan blades.
Other relevant features: Parts of portable a fan are guard, blade, and speed control bottom. Pedestal fans save space and money. With pedestal fans, the fan head is mounted on a stand so the unit can be placed behind couches or other furniture. They can be easily tucked into corners and provide high air delivery.

VENTILATION FANS

What are the features of the Luminous Ventilating fan?
The Luminous Ventilation fans should be installed in a way to draw fresh air movement throughout the room or building to be ventilated so that it prevents formation of air pockets and the stale air is totally extracted The ventilation fan should be installed at a higher level than ceiling fan blades. In many areas within a building, mechanical ventilation, powered by fans is highly recommended. The rate of ventilation, measured in cubic meter of air per hour must be sufficient to satisfy the following three requirements:
a) Sufficient air movement throughout the room or building to prevent the formation of pockets of stale, stagnant air.
b) Sufficient fresh air supply and foul air exhaust to limit the level of air pollution from all sources in the building, including humidity.
c) Reduction of air temperature, within the limits set by the climate, by the removal of heat generated within the building or supplied by the sun.
It is highly recommended to mount the fan on a wall opposite to the inlets and at highest possible level normally not less than 7 feet so that any smoke, steam or outdoor laden air, warmer than ambient temperature within the room and having tendency to arise, can be effectively exhausted.
