  • Motor: The motor is the most important component of a ceiling fan. For example, motors with higher power capability can be matched with high pitch aerodynamic blades to deliver high air at lower speed/RPM and hence causing lower noise. Motor consists of various parts like Ball bearing, Stator, Stack Height, Copper winding on rotor, rotor, Capacitor.
  • Capacitor: There are usually two capacitors in a ceiling fan motor. One is the “ Start” capacitor and the other is the “ Run” capacitor. Simply put, an AC motor needs a rotating magnetic field in order to turn the motor shaft (fan blades). This is done by applying voltage with different phases to different windings. In a single phase system (like at your house where you would use a ceiling fan) there is only one voltage phase.
  • Blade:The Ceiling fans come in various blades from 3, 4, 5 with 3 blade being the most common. In India, mostly, ceiling fans with 3 blades are used.Three blades turn out to be the optimum number of blades for best air moving performance and efficiency. Many ceiling fans designed for the home come with standard four or five blades. Beyond having a pleasing symmetrical aspect, it is at the 4-blade and 5-blade level that the ideal balance is achieved between the amount of air circulated and amount of tolerable ambient noise. It is stated that greater numbers of blades are usually added for styling purposes. The fan blade size and the number of fan blades do matter to a large extent. The bigger (e.g., wider or longer) the fan blade, the more airflow the blade is able to generate. Likewise, having more blades moving through the air would generate more airflow too.
  • Blade Pitch: A flat blade just slices through the air and does not assist air movement, so it is important that a blade of a ceiling fan is tilted at least 12 to 15 degrees. The angle assists air movement. It is also important to note that if pitch increases beyond 12-15 degree centigrade, the efficiency of motor running the fan decreases thus increasing electricity bills.

BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) launched a star rating scheme for ceiling fans in year 2006. It has currently only rated fans with size of 1200 mm and minimum air delivery of 210 cu m/min. The rating is given on basis of an indicator called “Service Value” which is ratio of air delivery (in cu m/min) to the power input. Greater the service value, higher the efficiency.

5. What is a safe distance between the ceiling and the fan blades?
Your ceiling fan’s blades need to be at about 12 inches from the ceiling to produce the best airflow. Unless it is a hugger ceiling fan that is designed to be closer to the ceiling, if your typical fan is too close or too far from the ceiling it won’t move as much air. If you have vaulted ceilings you’ll want to add a longer downrod so the blades are about 9 feet from the floor.

  • Metallic paint finish: Metallic paint, sometimes also called “ Metal-flake” has actual pieces of metal in it which are highly reflective.The individual pieces tend to lay in the paint in a horizontal manner. They are mixed in with regular paint and are themselves fairly flat hence you can discern the individual pieces if you look closely.
  • Electroplated finish: Electroplating adds properties to metal which make it desirable throughout a wide range of industries. c) Reduction of air temperature, within the limits set by the climate, by the removal of heat generated within the building or supplied by the sun.
It is highly recommended to mount the fan on a wall opposite to the inlets and at highest possible level normally not less than 7 feet so that any smoke, steam or outdoor laden air, warmer than ambient temperature within the room and having tendency to arise, can be effectively exhausted.
